Book Find – “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady”

One of my amazing book finds for 2011at a second-hand book shop was this:

The Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady: A facsimile reproduction of a 1906 naturalist’s diary by Edith Holden

It is a beautiful book filled with remarkable illustrations in watercolor, with beautifully hand-written poetry, sayings, and observations of the flora and fauna found around the home of Edith Holden in Olton, Warwickeshire recorded from January to December of 1906.

It is said in the book jacket flap that “she allowed no one to see it. For seventy years, this enchanting book had lain undiscovered until it was found recently on the shelves of an English country house.”

Edith Holden is a published illustrator who tragically drowned in the Thames. Thankfully she had left behind her a very inspiring sketchbook, which I open from time to time to just marvel upon and be inspired by its contents. Here are some samples for you to enjoy.
